Long before Latin dance nights became common throughout Corpus Christi and the Coastal Bend, Latin Talk was introducing audiences to the rhythms of salsa, merengue, and Latin dance music.
Founded by music educator and guitarist Michael Anthony Perez, the ensemble emerged from a passion for authentic Nuevo Flamenco music and a desire to bring salsa, merengue, and Latin rhythms to audiences throughout South Texas.
Today, Latin Talk remains one of the most recognized and enduring salsa and merengue ensembles in Corpus Christi and the Coastal Bend. For more than 25 years, the group has performed for weddings, festivals, corporate events, private celebrations, hospitality venues, and networking receptions throughout South Texas.
Whether performing as a trio, small ensemble, or full 10-piece dance orchestra, Latin Talk presents salsa, merengue, bachata, cumbia, Latin jazz, and dance favorites in settings ranging from elegant cocktail receptions to packed dance floors. Depending on the occasion, the ensemble can provide sophisticated Latin jazz and conversational background music or transition into a vibrant dance experience that keeps guests engaged throughout the evening.
Salsa, Merengue, Bachata, and Latin Jazz for Every Celebration
From intimate gatherings to lively dance floors, Latin Talk delivers the musicianship and authenticity that bring people together. Whether the setting calls for refined Latin jazz during cocktails, background music for a corporate reception, or a full dance orchestra later in the evening, performances are tailored to complement the occasion while keeping guests engaged when the celebration calls for it.
As demand for Latin dance music grew throughout Corpus Christi, Michael’s brother, Jon E. Grand, became the group’s music director, helping organize and expand the repertoire to serve a broader variety of audiences and events. The music evolved beyond Nuevo Flamenco into a carefully structured collection of salsa, merengue, bachata, cumbia, and Latin favorites that preserve the spirit and musicianship that have defined the ensemble for more than two decades.
A Legacy of South Texas Music
Music has always been part of the Perez family. Michael and Jon are grandsons of Beto Garcia, drummer and founder of the Texas Jazz Festival and one of the most influential figures in South Texas music history. Since making its Texas Jazz Festival debut in 1999, Latin Talk has become a festival favorite throughout the region, continuing a musical legacy that stretches back generations.
In 2012, the ensemble’s contributions to South Texas music were recognized with a star on the South Texas Music Walk of Fame. Over the years, Latin Talk has appeared alongside internationally recognized artists including José Feliciano, Strunz and Farah, Lara and Reyes, and others, bringing decades of experience to festivals, corporate gatherings, and celebrations throughout South Texas.
The ensemble has also shared stages with acclaimed artists and ensembles throughout the region while maintaining a commitment to authentic Latin dance music and exceptional musicianship. That same philosophy continues today, with flexible ensemble configurations ranging from intimate Latin jazz groups to a full 10-piece dance orchestra.
